Complex approach to definition of term «potential» in economy is applied. As a result of systematization and analysis of existing interpretations of economic potential the main approaches to its definition are outlined. Using the principle of ascent from abstract to concrete while analyzing potential as a difficult dialectal system, a component model is formed and grounded. This component model can be used in analysis of socio-economic systems of macro- and meso level. Principles of potential classifications are determined and definition of economic potential of socio-economic systems is presented.
