The necessity of raising the question of improvement of regional policy in Ukraine and mechanisms for its implementation is described. It is proved that under Ukrainian realities minor intermediate results of the transformation of the Ukrainian economy to a market economy did not change: macroeconomic instability, increasingly uneven regional development, growth and differentiation level of disproportionality. unstable and inconsistent reforms in regional development has led to a lack of clear and consistent basic parameters of state regional policy.

Based on analysis of features of formation of state regional policy in Ukraine the stages of its evolution is marked. The main stages of forming meaningful characteristics of regional policy, that reflect the its implementation tactics and tools of managerial influence on the processes of regional development are defined. Also article deals with regulatory and legal framework reforms that took place during the years of independence of Ukraine from 1991 to present.

The basic disadvantages of its implementation, particularly in the area of strategic planning, intergovernmental relations, relations between business and government regulation of intra-regional and inter-territorial issues are analysed. Fundamental position, direction and priority targets of modernization of state regional policy in Ukraine that will apply to ensure decentralization of power, strengthening the real government and rationalization of management impacts on socio-economic development of regions by transferring powers and resources for their implementation at regional and local level are proved.

Attention is focused on the role of the Lviv school Regional studies in the formation of methodological principles of regional policy of Ukraine, development of strategic and legal documents of the national and regional levels for improving regional competitiveness and identify strategic prospects of their development.
